EQUIBASE RELEASES LISTS OF TOP JOCKEYS, TRAINERS, OWNERS & HORSES IN 2001


Jerry Bailey, Bob Baffert and Richard Englander head the individual lists of the top 100 jockeys, trainers and owners respectively by earnings in 2001, according to final statistics released today by Equibase Company LLC, the Thoroughbred industry’s Official database for racing information and statistics.

Among Thoroughbreds, Captain Steve led the way with 2001 earnings of $4,201,200. Following Captain Steve were Point Given, with earnings of $3,350,000, and Tiznow, with $2,981,880.

The year-end compilations encompass all Thoroughbred racing in North America as well as eight international stakes races designated for inclusion by the North American Racing Data Standards Committee. The top 100 lists for 2001 are accessible through www.equibase.com, as are daily rankings of the top 50 by category for the current year.

Jerry Bailey rode 227 winners from 912 mounts to pace all jockeys with earnings of $22,597,720. John Velasquez finished second, with 305 wins from 1,411 mounts and earnings of $15,073,790.

Rounding out the list of top 10 jockeys were: Pat Day, $14,497,859 (249 wins/1,197 mounts); Edgar Prado, $14,133,395 (259/1,569); Jorge Chavez, $13,856,699 (247/1,344); Chris McCarron, $12,914,732 (122/607); Gary Stevens, $12,000,331 (99/535); Alex Solis, $11,577,481 (224/1,200); Robby Albarado, $10,631,669 (272/1,401); and Ramon Dominguez, $10,514,207 (431/1,864).

Bob Baffert edged Robert Frankel in the trainer standings. Baffert’s runners won 138 races from 660 starts, for earnings of $16,354,996. Frankel-trained horses won 101 races from 392 starts for earnings of $14,727,446.

Completing the list of top 10 trainers were: William Mott, $9,418,657 (152 wins/744 starts); Steven Asmussen, $8,068,409 (294/1,459); Scott Lake, $7,817,856 (407/1,566); Todd Pletcher, $7,731,203 (128/583); D. Wayne Lukas, $5,947,971 (96/646); Christophe Clement, $5,557,669 (75/356); Jerry Hollendorfer, $5,497,046 (263/1,133); and John Kimmel, $5,496,627 (105/520).

Richard Englander topped the leading owners list with earnings of $9,812,272. Englander’s horses won 406 races from 2,041 starts. Runner-up was The Thoroughbred Corporation whose horses won 67 races from 367 starts for earnings of $8,012,163.

Rounding out the list of top 10 owners were: Juddmonte Farms, Inc., $6,926,015 (41 wins/138 starts); Stronach Stable, $6,537,681 (127/770); Godolphin, Inc., $5,627,172 (13/53); Michael Pegram, $5,034,588 (22/123); Gary Tanaka, $4,413,658 (28/179); Sam-Son Farms, $4,055,490 (39/218); John Franks, $3,605,752 (118/1,018); and John Oxley, $3,164,339 (23/92).
