Hollywood Park - Wednesday, April 29, 2009

We're all here for a day of racing at Hollywood Park. Climb into your saddle and ride along side as we pilot you through the challenge of handicapping. We will be making a series of recommendations below which should give you another take on today's action other than you might get by simply peering through the program. While we do most of the work, you may have to make some revisions based on conditions at Hollywood Park. Also, we don't do this all alone. Some peers will chime in with their analysis below as well and at the core, we combine our expertise and the data that TrackMaster produces to make our picks. Good luck!

#5 BETTYBOOMBOOM (ML=8/5)
#4 NINE TO DINE (ML=3/1)

BETTYBOOMBOOM - Strong return on investment for this rider and handler twosome. NINE TO DINE - A pony coming back this rapidly after a sharp race is a good omen. Trainer, Lewis, has been deliberate with this filly off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. I like this filly. Has the highest earnings per start in this one.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 VOODOO'S VISION (ML=9/5), #2 CALL ALY (ML=4/1),

VOODOO'S VISION - Finished sixth last time. Would have to get better to be there at the wire in today's race. CALL ALY - This filly is always in the mix, but just doesn't win. Hard to wager on her on the top end.

#5 ROMAN COUNSEL (ML=5/2)
#2 STERLING OUTLOOK (ML=9/5)

ROMAN COUNSEL - This colt has higher odds on the morning line than the other entrant from the stable of Harrington. Better watch out for this angle. I like this 1st time starter mainly because his morning drills for this have been here at Hollywood Park. All systems look good for this colt. Last prep, 2nd fastest of the day, shows he's fit and ready. Harrington, the trainer, shows intent by adding Lasix in this race. A positive sign. This trainer has a highly positive ROI with 1st time starters. STERLING OUTLOOK - T. Baze and Miller perform well when they combine forces. It's hard to beat a +103 ROI for a rider and trainer. Generally speaking, horses on Lasix for the first time should be considered. That's what we have here.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 RITZVILLE (ML=2/1), #6 SOUTHERN SAINT (ML=4/1),

RITZVILLE - Just don't think he is offering enough value at the likely odds. SOUTHERN SAINT - M/L odds of 4/1 make this thoroughbred a pass by my approach.

#5 ROMAN COUNSEL is going to be the play if we are getting 5/2 or better

#2 THANKFULLY (ML=5/1)
#1 FLEW FIRST CLASS (ML=5/2)
#5 CATO MAJOR (ML=7/2)

THANKFULLY - Rosario and Sherman perform well when they partner up. It's hard to beat a +35 return on investment for a jockey and trainer. Early speed is always important in horse racing, but the lone speed horse is always dangerous. FLEW FIRST CLASS - Filly was beaten as the public choice in a $25,000 Claiming race last time out. Was a good effort even though she finished third. This filly is in superb physical condition right now. Ran third in the last race and comes back rapidly. Nice return on investment for this jockey and trainer tandem. That 96 fig this filly garnered in her last event tells me she's a big time player today. CATO MAJOR - This entrant brings in a lot of money per start. I believe she can increase the lifetime earnings right here.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 DITTO THIS (ML=2/1), #3 MISS CHERRY (ML=3/1),

DITTO THIS - This mount hasn't been near the victor at the finish line lately. No success for this mount in a short distance race over the last two months tells me that this filly is in a very difficult circumstance MISS CHERRY - Most unsatisfactory speed rating last race out at Santa Anita at 5 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this less than sharp equine will improve too much in today's race.

#8 MARCADE (ML=9/5)
#4 TRUENO (ML=5/1)

MARCADE - You always have to be on the lookout for revenue generating jockey/handler teams; we have one right here. Have to make this gelding a contender; he comes off a good effort on April 16th. The 98 last race speed rating looks strong on paper. TRUENO - I expect this magnificent animal to bewilder some fans in today's event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 VICAR'S WALK (ML=5/2), #6 CAPTAIN CHARISMA (ML=4/1),

VICAR'S WALK - When checking today's class rating, he will have to record a much better speed fig than last time out to be competitive in this dirt sprint. CAPTAIN CHARISMA - Can't play this steed in today's sprint of 6 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a short distance race recently.

#2 TOUGH APPLES (ML=2/1)
#4 UNUSUALLY HOT (ML=5/1)
#1 YASINISI (IRE) (ML=4/1)

TOUGH APPLES - Good return on investment for this rider and trainer duo. If you review the PP's for this mount, you'll see she has recorded the top speed fig at the distance and surface. A repeat performance in this event and this horse has a superb chance to win. This trainer brings horses to the turf fit and ready to go, winning over 20 pct of the time under similar conditions. UNUSUALLY HOT - I think this filly is ready to run a good one. She's had enough outings since the layoff and should be fit. The rider and conditioner combination have a favorable ROI when they join forces. Walsh is strong in turf sprints. This horse should have no excuses if she doesn't win. YASINISI (IRE) - Last time around the track on the sod, this horse was strong. Anything close in today's race, and this one should win. Look for this one to go all the way to the winner's circle at some decent odds in this race. Ran sixth in last race, but not more than 5 from the lead at the end. Came home in sizzling time last out. A positive sign.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 MAMA KNOWS BEST (ML=5/2), #5 NO KA OI (ML=3/1),

MAMA KNOWS BEST - She showed not much at all in the last contest. Don't believe this less than sharp equine will make an impact in today's event. That last speed rating was somewhat easily forgotten when compared with today's class rating. NO KA OI - Where is the speed? None to be found in here to set things up for this animal.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - TOUGH APPLES - This mare has the best last speed figure at Santa Anita. Must be considered in your betting.

Choice Plays:

#1 HOG'S HOLLOW (ML=7/2)
#4 GREAT HOME (ML=4/1)
#5 MISREMEMBERED (ML=4/1)

HOG'S HOLLOW - This gelding is in nice condition, having run a nice race on Apr 2nd, finishing third. When a thoroughbred drops at least 5 pounds (like this one is), you must take notice. It may not seem like much, but certainly could make the difference. GREAT HOME - When a thoroughbred drops at least 5 pounds (like this one is), you must take notice. It may not seem like much, but certainly could make the difference. Handicapping information show this horse with three improving Equibase speed figures. Rosario should be on a live horse in this event. Trying to get to the winner's circle for the 1st time moving from a race on the turf to the dirt. I think Drysdale will have him conditioned well for today's contest. With 'blinkers-on' this gelding should be very competitive. MISREMEMBERED - You have to like that recent race figure, 104, which is the highest most recent race speed rating of this field. Came home in fast time last time out. A positive sign. Maiden is going to the main track, and may not have liked the turf last out. Has a good chance to get into the winner's circle for the first time.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 PARTY HARD (ML=2/1), #6 INDY RIDE (ML=5/1),

PARTY HARD - Almost certainly won't make much of an impression this time. INDY RIDE - This colt hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last two outings.

#8 MY CITY BY THE BAY (ML=5/1)
#9 DODGEN BULLETS (ML=3/1)
#10 POCOSIN'S GAME BOY (ML=20/1)
#5 QUICK ENOUGH (ML=7/2)

MY CITY BY THE BAY - Gelding has shown some speed. This shorter distance should be better for him. This thoroughbred coming off a strong performance in the last thirty days is a strong challenger in my opinion. That 116 fig this gelding notched in his last event tells me he's a chief player this time around. Average class figure is tops in this bunch. I think that is a big edge for a race on the grass. DODGEN BULLETS - This mount obviously likes the conditions for today's race. Has recorded the highest Equibase speed figure on the turf at the distance-surface. Likes to go to the lead and the fact that today is a shorter distance should be beneficial. The rider and conditioner combination have a positive return on investment when they join forces. This gelding is utmost in EPS (earnings per start). Take a good look at this one before the race. POCOSIN'S GAME BOY - The morning line odds on this gelding are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of trainer O'Neill. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. Gelding is a few starts into a comeback here. Should give a big performance today. QUICK ENOUGH - I have to like this gelding's chances at the shorter trip. This gelding is a gem of consistency, almost always in the top three. I seem to always make money betting Ellis horses on the turf. That barn has a solid win percent for this distance/surface.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 STORM BRAVE (ML=4/1), #4 NOBLETY (ML=5/1), #7 BAMAHA BREEZE (ML=8/1),

STORM BRAVE - This horse hasn't been around in either of his last couple of outings. NOBLETY - If today's contest shapes up right, all the front runners will force a ferocious speed battle early. Too bad this horse is one of those front runners. This vulnerable equine ran a common speed figure last time out. He shouldn't run much better and will likely lose in today's race running that rating. BAMAHA BREEZE - Didn't show much run last time out of the box. Probably won't do much running in today's event.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - DODGEN BULLETS - A must consideration in your investing today. This racer's superior average class number makes him tough to beat.

#11 MULTITASKER (ML=5/2)
#12 BRENT'S PASSION (ML=8/1)

MULTITASKER - This filly likes to be near the lead. Today's race is a shorter trip and should increase her chances. Rosario and Sherlock partnered together are a punter's friend. A campaigner coming back this quickly after a good contest is a good omen. BRENT'S PASSION - I like to play horses that faced open company in their last race and drop into state bred races. This filly fits the bill. Getting a weight break of 6 lbs from last race at Santa Anita on Mar 25th. Could make the difference today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 FIRE WOMAN (ML=9/2), #8 CLASSIC DEMAND (ML=5/1), #13 LADY ALEX (ML=6/1),

FIRE WOMAN - Improbable that this horse will finish better than she did last time out of the box when ending up fifth. This filly hasn't had any strong finishes in sprint races in the last 60 days. CLASSIC DEMAND - Will not be easy for this animal to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Unlikely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put her on the vulnerable competitors list. LADY ALEX - Doesn't seem to be in a cozy situation this time.

#5 PORTLAND STORM (ML=2/1)
#2 EL PALQUI (ML=5/2)
#3 HARAKA HARAKA (ML=9/5)

PORTLAND STORM - Have to like the way Pederson has raced this gelding back into shape off the layoff. Animal is well spotted in this sprint and I think he'll run well today. He'll be laying in perfect striking position, right behind the early pace. For my money, a bullet workout is the best indicator of fitness there is. Look at that last one - 48.0. Very impressive. EL PALQUI - Looked very good in last race at Golden Gate. A quick turnaround means Klokstad thinks he can do it again. You'll be making money right and left by turning your racing money onto this jockey/conditioner combination. This gelding is in nice condition. Ran first on Apr 15th. The last speed fig of 102 is the best last race fig in the field. HARAKA HARAKA - This horse brings in a lot of money per start. I believe he will boost that total in this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 DEVIL CIELO (ML=5/1),

DEVIL CIELO - The speed ratings continue to descend, 100/96/93. Not a good indication. Finished third in his most recent performance with a mediocre speed figure. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this group.

#5 KATIE G. (ML=8/5)
#6 ADAYFORPICKNDAISYS (ML=2/1)

KATIE G. - The rider/trainer tandem of Antongeorgi and Miyadi has a strong return on investment together. Antongeorgi comes to ride after getting to know the filly in the last contest. Although I sometimes have doubts about a thoroughbred who failed to win as the public choice in her last race, this filly got a solid fig and fits well here. I like to bet on this handicapping angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a good effort within the last month. ADAYFORPICKNDAISYS - Horses that finish runner-up in Maiden races and finish well clear of the show horse are generally good bets next time out. Have to make this filly a contender; she comes off a good contest on April 10th. Utilizing this jockey/trainer combination is a good choice. You have to like that most recent race speed figure, 86, which is the best most recent race speed rating of this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 LADY AMANDA (ML=3/1), #1 RHYTHM IN MY LIFE (ML=8/1),

LADY AMANDA - Finished third last time out. Would have to move up to finish in the money in today's race. Won't be easy for this thoroughbred to beat this field off of that last rating. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put her on the likely underlays list. RHYTHM IN MY LIFE - Doesn't seem to be worth 8/1 this time out. Pass on her this time.

#4 JULIESDIORBRACELET (ML=6/1)
#5 DA HEAT (ML=9/2)
#1 REALLY MAGICAL (ML=15/1)

JULIESDIORBRACELET - I figure that today's shorter trip should help this filly. Filly's finish positions keep getting better with each race. Maybe today's the day. Always be wary of the longer priced horse when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. Horse has improved at least 2 Equibase speed figure points in last two races. I look for that to continue right here. DA HEAT - In a field like this, you should play a first-timer with regular workouts. It's a very wise wager. It's a big plus that this 1st timer has been working over the same track that she makes her debut at today. I always like to see a pony getting Lasix for the 1st time. Lage adds it on this one today. REALLY MAGICAL - The ROI when Harvey and Jackson team up is outstanding.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 MY GOLLY (ML=6/5), #3 CHECKIN IT OUT (ML=5/2),

MY GOLLY - The fourth place result in the last event was not the greatest. CHECKIN IT OUT - Finished sixth last time. Would have to get better to be on the board in today's race.

#6 LUCK IS FLEETING (ML=7/2)
#7 DREWISMYSON (ML=5/2)
#2 EVEN ODDS (ML=3/1)
#1 SILVER DUST (ML=8/1)

LUCK IS FLEETING - Stick with this horse. No other viable pace gives this horse a strong chance at the winner's circle. The jockey/trainer twosome of Antongeorgi and Miyadi has a strong ROI together. Have to make this gelding a strong challenger; he comes off a strong effort on April 11th. DREWISMYSON - Schvaneveldt and Spawr have had terrific success together over the last year. I like to wager on this angle, a campaigner coming back off a solid race within the last thirty days. After the event aboard this animal on Apr 11th, the jockey is going to 'know' the gelding much better. I believe the addition of blinks today will help this gelding focus his attention on racing. EVEN ODDS - Trainer James moves this animal to a lower class rank to face a lower rated field. Look for a nice effort in here. I like to bet on this angle, a pony coming back off a solid effort within the last month or so. SILVER DUST - Several positive 'vibes' attached to this racer and his barn.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 CHAUNCEY (ML=9/2), #3 HEBESMALLBUTMIGHTY (ML=8/1),

CHAUNCEY - Hard to put any dough on this gelding on the win end. Likes to end up on the board though. This less than sharp equine will have a tough time winning this 1 1/16 miles dirt race. He just doesn't win races very often. This horse has not tallied a victory here today in 12 starts. Little chance he wins today. HEBESMALLBUTMIGHTY - Hard to gamble on these non-winning types at less than generous odds.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - DREWISMYSON - Having the best speed fig last race of 88 at Golden Gate on Apr 11th. This gelding has an excellent chance to win here.

#1 DESERT SIREN (ML=2/1)
#7 BEAUTIFUL DIXIE (ML=3/1)
#2 FUEGO (ML=15/1)

DESERT SIREN - James brings her right back. I recommend you stay with this hot filly. A winning percentage like 42 is terrific for any jockey/conditioner tandem. Got to like a race horse who can make up a ton of ground in the stretch. This filly came flying late sprinting last time out and should relish the longer distance of today's race. BEAUTIFUL DIXIE - This jockey/conditioner duo has been producing a very positive ROI, right at +55. Winless in her last three starts, this mare's last win came on February 5th at the same level and distance of today's race. Owns the highest speed rating on the turf at this distance. This horse is at the top in earnings per start. She looks solid in today's race. Solid average class rating on this horse. Should have the ability to run well on the turf. FUEGO - Speed is always important in horse racing, but the lone speed horse is always dangerous. This horse's last race was out at Golden Gate in a race with an Equibase class figure of 94. Dropping significantly in Equibase class figure this time out puts her in a solid position in this race. Three consecutive improved Equibase speed figures (62-69-73) make this animal a dominant contender.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 SHENODINO (ML=5/2), #6 MOUNTAIN VILLAGER (ML=6/1),

SHENODINO - In the last race this less than sharp equine finished fifth. Doesn't look good for her chances this time. Recorded a pedestrian speed figure in the last race in a $4,000 Claiming race on April 23rd. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that number. MOUNTAIN VILLAGER - This filly probably needs a more conducive pace scenario to make her closing move.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - BEAUTIFUL DIXIE - With the highest last speed rating of 87, this mare looks exceptional against these horses.

HONOUR PASS - This filly ran versus the boys last time. In with her own gender today. This racer coming off a solid effort in the last month or so is a solid contender in my humble opinion. The 83 recent race figure looks strong in the TrackMaster PPs. Ranked number 1 in earnings per start. Another indication that this horse has the class to take this race. RINGING BERNIE - I really like it when a horse's last workout is at the same distance or longer than today's contest like this one's is. This filly should run better today now that she's back facing here own gender. Russell 'The Muscle' Baze and Kitchingman perform well when they combine forces. Hard to beat a win pct of 35.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 MISS STELLA BLUES (ML=3/1), #7 FREE RUNNIN (ML=9/2),

#6 LOUISIANA LAWYER (ML=15/1)

NEWPORT TOPPER - We have lots of early speed with this horse. She could wire this field. This animal is number one in earnings per race. She looks solid in today's clash. SONG AND A WAGER - I usually like playing sprint horses who are 3-4 races into a come back. This horse coming off a sharp try in the last month is a strong challenger in my opinion. Three consecutive improved Equibase speed figures (79-82-92) make this thoroughbred a dominant contender. I like the fact that this mare's last speed rating, 92, is tops in this field. LOUISIANA LAWYER - Ayarza and Tagliaferri perform well when they partner up. It's hard to beat a +81 ROI for a rider and handler. I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a comeback.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 SPECIAL VENTURE (ML=6/1), #3 SURLEY TEMPLE (ML=8/1),

SPECIAL VENTURE - Difficult to play any mount in a short distance contest at 6/1 when she hasn't shown any positive results in sprints in the last sixty days. SURLEY TEMPLE - This horse ran a mediocre fig last time out. She shouldn't run better and will likely suffer defeat today running that figure.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - NEWPORT TOPPER - Coming right back after racing on April 18th at Golden Gate. She'll run a good one today.

LAPOLLO - All systems look good for this gelding. Last prep, 2nd fastest of the day, shows he's fit and ready. I usually like playing sprint horses who are 3-4 races into a come back. OLD MUSKET - He keeps getting closer at the finish with each and every start. This horse coming off a nice try in the last 30 days is a win candidate in my humble opinion. COUNT BRAHMS - Faced tougher in the last race at Oaktree at Santa Anita. Based on Equibase class ratings, this is a weaker group, so I will put this horse on my list of top contenders. This mount picks up a lot of cash per race. I believe he can add to the lifetime bankroll right here.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 LATE NITE DEVIL (ML=8/5), #6 WIND SHIFTER (ML=5/1),

LATE NITE DEVIL - Just can't wager on this runner. Didn't show me anything last race out or on Feb 4th. Today's race is 6 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a short distance race in the last two months. Not the best of indicators. Shins may have some problems since they added wraps in the last event. Today's Money in the Vault Horse is the horse deemed by The Turf Club Analysts to be today's most likely winner. Today's Live Longshot is the horse most likely to make an impact at big odds. On rare occasions the same horse can qualify for both distinctions. Races are rated from one to four gold coins. Four coin races are the races to wager the most money on, while one coin races should be skipped altogether or have a smaller amount wagered on them.
