DOSAGE

Dosage, a technique for classifying Thoroughbred pedigrees by type based on characteristics inherited from selected sires, are not necessarily those they possessed as runners but are the qualities passed on as breeding animals. Thus, in contrast to conventional pedigree analysis based on a historical perspective of ancestral performance, Dosage relies on the dynamics of inheritance. It is an alternative and complementary method of pedigree interpretation, and may help avoid potential problems associated with the traditional concept of "breeding the best to the best."

Indicates when a horse appears more than once within the subject horse’s 5-generation pedigree. For example:

Inbreeding: Bold Ruler: 4S X 3D

Indicates that Bold Ruler appears in the 4th generation on the sire’s side as well as the 3rd generation on the dam’s side, of the subject horse’s pedigree.
