RACE #10 - BELMONT PARK - 5:47 PM EASTERN POST

The Suburban Handicap

10.0 FURLONGS DIRT GRADE II THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $400,000.00 PURSE

#3 IT'S A BIRD
#4 ASIATIC BOY
#7 REAL MERCHANT
#1 FINALLYMADEIT

One of the classic handicap races of the American turf, the Suburban was first run in 1884 at Sheepshead Bay. The Suburban was named after the City and Suburban Handicap in England. The Suburban is the final leg of the "Handicap Triple," which began in 1891, the first leg being the Metropolitan, and the second being the Brooklyn. Only four horses have won these races in one racing year. The year, horse and respective weight carried in each race are as follows: 1931 - Whisk Broom II (126, 139, 130); 1953 - Tom Fool (130, 128, 136); 1961 - Kelso (130, 133, 136); 1984 - Fit To Fight (124, 126, 129). This year's edition is the 123rd running of this event, and #3 IT'S A BIRD has hit the board in four straight, including a trio of "POWER RUN WINS" embedded in this recent streak of racing consistency. #4 ASIATIC BOY, an Argentinian-bred entry, who has been racing mainly in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, goes to the post with the skills of the Jockey/Trainer tandem of Alan Garcia and Kiaran McLaughlin ... they've hit the board with 52% of more than 200 entries saddled as a team to date.

# 2 BABBLIN BROOK 6/1

# 8 A SWEET GAMBLE 4/1

# 6 STREAKIN TO FAME 12/1

I've got to go with BABBLIN BROOK. With a nice Equibase class figure average of 67, has one of the most favorable class advantages in this group. A SWEET GAMBLE - Boasts strong Speed Figures on average overall when put alongside the rest of this group of horses in this race. Is tough not to examine given the company run in recently. STREAKIN TO FAME - Blair has him trained strongly to break promptly out of the starting gate.

# 3 COSTA RISING 3/1

# 1 DESERT WHEAT 7/2

# 7 NOWANDFOREVERMORE 8/1

I lean toward COSTA RISING here. Appears to have a formidable class edge based on the latest company kept. Solid average Speed Figures in turf route races make this racer a solid contender. Win percentage one of the most competitive in this group. DESERT WHEAT - He must be given consideration given the decent speed figures. Mott has a formidable 17 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface. NOWANDFOREVERMORE - Very strong rider and trainer combo winning 23 percent of their races working together. Well above average win rate at this distance/surface.

9.0 FURLONGS TURF GRADE II THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $150,000.00 PURSE

#5 WHATSTHESCRIPT
#6 ARTISTE ROYAL
#4 MONTEREY JAZZ
#1 BUENOS DIAS

#5 WHATSTHESCRIPT is the speed leader here in the "Independence Day Feature," and has turned in a quartet of "POWER RUNS" in his last five outings, hitting the board in a pair, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in his 4th race back. #6 ARTISTE ROYAL, an Irish-bred entry, has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in three of his last four outings, winning in his 4th race back. Jockey Rafael Bejarano and Trainer Neil Drysdale send him to the post today ... they've "whacked the tote board" with 55% of their entries saddled as a team to date.

Choice Plays:

#4 WAVES OF HONOUR (ML=7/2)

WAVES OF HONOUR - This gelding's last speed rating is high enough to triumph here, I'll bet on him right back this time. Have to forget about that last turf race. This gelding should do better hitting the main track in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 TEMERITY (ML=3/1), #1 CONCERNING SUTTON (ML=4/1), #3 NO CAPS NO FLOORS (ML=4/1),

TEMERITY - He showed not much at all in the last event. CONCERNING SUTTON - This horse's sire hasn't done too well with first-time-starters. NO CAPS NO FLOORS - 4/1 is too short of a price to take on this horse.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:

#4 WAVES OF HONOUR is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better

Choice Plays:

#6 BRIGHTIA RUBY (ML=9/5)

BRIGHTIA RUBY - This filly ran well in her last race but just couldn't conquer the winner. Note that she was well in front of the show horse, and looks like a major contender in this field. Gothard drops her down to this class. You don't need too much more handicapping knowledge to think this thoroughbred should be one of the top contenders at this level. Ranked numero uno in EPS (earnings per start). Another indication that this horse has class. I like the fact that this filly's last speed rating, 63, is tops in this group.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 RUN REBA RUN (ML=5/2), #8 EVENING SERENADE (ML=5/1), #2 SEPTEMBER CEREMONY (ML=5/1),

RUN REBA RUN - Hard to support any horse with declining Equibase speed figs of 55/51/41. EVENING SERENADE - Hasn't been coming close at all of late. SEPTEMBER CEREMONY - Could be tough for this thoroughbred to beat this field off of that last speed figure. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class figure, so put her on the possibly overvalued equines list.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - BRIGHTIA RUBY - This filly fits nicely here against these ponies. Her average class figure is tops in the field.

Have to go with #6 BRIGHTIA RUBY on the win end if we get at least 1/1 odds
